Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
~ Proverbs 18:21Solomon’s proverb is unflinching in its clarity: your tongue has the power of life and death. Not influence. Not suggestion. Power. The words you speak over your marriage are not neutral, they are either building up or tearing down, planting seeds of life or seeds of destruction.
Consider the words that fill your home. Do you speak affirmation or criticism? Encouragement or contempt? Do you declare God’s promises over your spouse, or do you rehearse their failures? Every word carries weight. A single sentence of genuine encouragement can sustain your spouse through an entire difficult day. A single careless insult can wound for years.
Choose to speak life. Affirm your spouse’s strengths. Encourage their dreams. Thank them for the things you’ve started to take for granted. Declare God’s promises over your relationship out loud. ECO’s Marriage Ministry encourages couples to build a culture of life-giving words in their home, because the fruit of your words will feed your marriage for years to come.
Father, set a guard over my mouth. Help me speak words of life, love, and encouragement over my spouse and my marriage. Amen.
