Genesis 2:24
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
~ Genesis 2:24Genesis 2:24 is the foundational statement on marriage in all of Scripture. Before there were wedding ceremonies, before there were rings or vows, there was this divine declaration: a man and a woman, leaving, uniting, becoming one. This is not a contract, it is a covenant, and the difference is everything.
A contract is a transaction: I will do my part as long as you do yours. It protects interests, limits liability, and includes exit clauses. A covenant is fundamentally different: it gives everything, holds nothing back, and is sealed not by lawyers but by God. When you stand at the altar, you are not signing a business agreement. You are entering a sacred bond.
As you prepare for marriage, understand the weight and beauty of what you are stepping into. This is holy ground. ECO’s Engaged Ministry helps couples grasp the depth of covenant commitment so that when they say “I do, ” they say it with full understanding of what those words mean in the economy of God.
God, help us understand the weight and beauty of covenant. As we prepare for marriage, root us deeply in Your design. Amen.
