Purpose of the Love Fast

The Love Fast is more than abstaining from food -- it is a deliberate act of surrender designed to create space in your heart for God's love to grow and overflow. When we fast with the intention of love, we align our physical discipline with spiritual purpose.

The purpose of this fast is threefold:

  • To deepen your intimacy with God by removing distractions and focusing your heart on His presence and His Word.
  • To expand your capacity for love -- love for God, love for yourself, and love for others -- as the Holy Spirit works in you during the fast.
  • To break spiritual barriers that may be hindering your relationships, your faith walk, or your ability to receive and give love freely.
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?" ~ Isaiah 58:6

How to Prepare

Preparation is essential for a meaningful fast. Before you begin, take time to ready your body, mind, and spirit for what God wants to do during this season.

Spiritual Preparation

  • Set your intention in prayer. Ask God to reveal what He wants you to focus on during this fast.
  • Confess any known sin and ask for forgiveness. Enter the fast with a clean heart.
  • Choose a Scripture or theme to anchor your fast. Let it guide your daily devotion.

Practical Preparation

  • Decide on your fasting type: full fast (water only), Daniel fast (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), partial fast (skipping specific meals), or a non-food fast (social media, entertainment).
  • Gradually reduce caffeine, sugar, and processed foods in the days leading up to your fast to minimize physical discomfort.
  • Prepare your schedule to allow extra time for prayer, worship, and Scripture reading.
  • Let a trusted friend or accountability partner know about your fast for support and encouragement.
"But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen." ~ Matthew 6:17-18

Daily Focus Areas

Each day of the Love Fast centers on a specific aspect of love, giving you a focused lens through which to pray, reflect, and grow. These daily themes are designed to build upon one another, creating a progressive journey into deeper love.

Sample Daily Themes

  • Day 1 -- Love is Patient: Meditate on patience as an expression of love. Where has impatience taken root in your relationships?
  • Day 2 -- Love is Kind: Practice intentional kindness. Look for opportunities to show compassion to someone who may not expect it.
  • Day 3 -- Love Does Not Envy: Examine areas of jealousy or comparison. Surrender them to God and celebrate others' blessings.
  • Day 4 -- Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs: Release unforgiveness. Write down grievances and prayerfully let them go.
  • Day 5 -- Love Always Trusts: Rebuild trust in God's plan. Reflect on moments where trusting God brought breakthrough.
  • Day 6 -- Love Always Hopes: Rekindle hope for your relationships, your future, and God's promises over your life.
  • Day 7 -- Love Never Fails: Rest in the assurance that God's love for you is unfailing and eternal.

Each day includes a prayer focus, a devotional reading, and a practical action step to carry love beyond the fast and into your daily interactions.

Scripture Foundations

The Love Fast is rooted in the Word of God. These Scriptures serve as the spiritual foundation for your fasting journey, providing comfort, direction, and strength.

  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 -- "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud..."
  • 1 John 4:7-8 -- "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God."
  • Romans 8:38-39 -- "For I am convinced that neither death nor life... will be able to separate us from the love of God."
  • Deuteronomy 6:5 -- "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."
  • John 15:12-13 -- "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."
  • Galatians 5:22-23 -- "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." ~ 1 Corinthians 13:13

Breaking the Fast

How you end your fast is just as important as how you begin it. Breaking the fast with intention honors the sacrifice you have made and helps transition the spiritual gains into lasting change.

Physical Guidance

  • Begin with light, easily digestible foods such as broth, fruit, or steamed vegetables.
  • Gradually reintroduce heavier foods over one to three days to avoid digestive discomfort.
  • Stay hydrated and listen to your body as you transition back to regular eating.

Spiritual Guidance

  • Spend time in thanksgiving, reflecting on what God revealed during the fast.
  • Journal your insights, prayers answered, and areas of growth you experienced.
  • Share your testimony with your faith community or accountability partner to encourage others.
  • Commit to one or two lifestyle changes inspired by the fast that you will carry forward.
"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." ~ Psalm 34:8

Continuing the Journey

The Love Fast is not a one-time event but a catalyst for ongoing spiritual transformation. The discipline, focus, and intimacy with God that you cultivate during the fast are meant to shape how you live and love every day.

  • Make fasting a regular practice. Consider incorporating shorter fasts into your monthly or quarterly spiritual rhythm.
  • Continue daily devotions. Use the prayer and Scripture habits you developed during the fast as a foundation for your ongoing quiet time.
  • Engage with your ECO community. Join a small group, attend a ministry gathering, or volunteer with Love in Action to keep love at the center of your life.
  • Mentor someone else. Share this guide with a friend, family member, or fellow believer and walk through it together.
  • Stay connected to Scripture. Let the Word of God continually reshape your understanding of love and relationships.

Remember, the goal of the Love Fast is not perfection -- it is progression. Every step you take toward deeper love is a step closer to the heart of God.

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." ~ Philippians 1:6
