Caregiving often begins not with a choice but with a crisis. This guide is designed to help you care for your loved one without losing yourself in the process.

Recognizing Caregiver Burnout

Caregiver burnout is not a character flaw. It is a physiological and emotional response to sustained stress without adequate support.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Burnout:

  • Constant exhaustion that sleep does not fix
  • Feeling resentful, irritable, or numb toward your loved one
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities you used to enjoy
  • Neglecting your own health, skipping meals, doctor appointments, or medications
  • Feeling like caregiving will never end and there is no way out
  • Frequent crying, emotional outbursts, or feeling nothing at all
  • Physical symptoms, headaches, stomach problems, weakened immune system
  • Feeling like you are disappearing as a person and only exist as a caregiver
Important: If you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) immediately.

Caregiver Self-Assessment

Rate each statement on a scale of 1 (rarely) to 5 (almost always):

  • I feel physically exhausted most days
  • I feel emotionally drained and have little left to give
  • I have neglected my own health needs
  • I feel resentful about my caregiving responsibilities
  • I have withdrawn from friends and activities I enjoy
  • I feel like I am disappearing as a person
Score 18+: You are likely experiencing significant burnout. Please reach out for help, you deserve support too.

Setting Sustainable Boundaries

  • You cannot pour from an empty cup, your needs matter
  • Saying "no" to something is saying "yes" to your own survival
  • Accept help when offered, give people specific tasks
  • Schedule regular breaks, even if brief
  • Maintain at least one activity that is just for you
  • Seek respite care, it exists for exactly this reason

Spiritual Survival

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”~ Matthew 11:28

God sees the caregiver. He does not ask you to be superhuman. He asks you to bring your exhaustion to Him and let Him carry what you cannot.
